THE TURNOVER Journal
How Do You Get a Vacation Rental Photo-Ready Between Guests?
The turnover-day list a short-term rental manager forwards to the cleaning team before the shoot — room by room, and who talks to whom.
Book the shoot on a turnover day, after the clean is finished and before the next check-in. Have the cleaning team leave the house exactly as the next guest will find it: beds made, towels out, supplies and carts gone, cars off the driveway. The manager sends that list to the team — Lucas talks only with the manager.
Below is the list, room by room, written to be forwarded to the cleaning team as it is.
What does the cleaning team need to leave ready?
Whole house
- Every bulb working
- Cleaning carts, vacuums, caddies and supply bins out of every room
- Anything the last guest left behind gone — chargers, bags, bottles, food
- The crew finished and out of the house before the shoot time
Bedrooms
- Every bed made with the bedding the guest gets — bunks top and bottom
- Nightstands down to what the house provides
- Closet doors closed
- Floors clear
Bathrooms
- Towels set out the way the guest will find them
- Toilet lids down
- Counters down to what the house provides
- Cleaning bottles and buckets out of the room
- Trash emptied
Kitchen
- Appliances that come with the house stay where the guest finds them — coffee maker included
- Dish rack, sponges and cleaning spray put away
- Sink empty, dishwasher closed
- Every dining chair pushed in at the table
Living areas and game room
- Cushions straightened, throws folded
- Pool table racked, cues on the rack, games in their place
- Remotes where the house keeps them
Pool deck
- Loungers and deck furniture set out
- Pool clean, floats and pool-cleaning equipment put away
Outside
- The cleaning team's vehicles off the driveway and off the curb in front of the house
- Trash and recycling bins out of view — turnover day fills them
- Laundry bags and linen carts out of sight
What should not be in the house on shoot day?
To us, the rule is one line: if the next guest won't find it, it isn't in the house when the photos are taken.
No flowers brought in for the day, no welcome basket that isn't part of the stay, no borrowed furniture. A vacation rental listing is an inventory, and the guest books what the photos show.
The platforms set the floor in writing. Airbnb's ground rules for hosts, under listing accuracy, require that the photos and description accurately represent the space, and that every listed amenity is available, with access limits such as pool hours disclosed. Airbnb also asks for the removal of content where AI or digital editing removed defects, hid damage or added features that don't exist (airbnb.com, "Ground rules for home hosts," undated; accessed September 2026). Vrbo's content policy prohibits content that is false or misleading, or that exaggerates or omits a material detail; prohibits using AI or AI editing tools to misrepresent the property; and asks that content be updated promptly when amenities or condition change (vrbo.com, Partner-Provided Content Policy, undated; accessed September 2026).
Plan on what is in the house being in the photos. The home is shot as it is set.
Virtual staging is not part of short-term bookings. The house is photographed with the furniture the guest will find.
Who talks to whom on turnover day?
Lucas talks with the manager, and only the manager. The manager passes the plan to the cleaning team.
One line of contact means one version of the plan: the shoot time, the list above, how the door opens. That makes the manager's phone the one on the booking.
When should the shoot land in the turnover window?
After the clean is finished, before the next check-in.
Tell the cleaning team the shoot time when the turn is scheduled, not the morning of. A clean that runs into the shoot puts people in the frame, and people stay out of the picture.
If the crew leaves before the shoot and no one will be at the home, the door and gate codes go into the booking flow, never by email. How Do You Get a Photographer Into a Gated Community? has the rest.
If the turn isn't finished, reschedule. It costs nothing.
Why every room, not the best rooms?
Because the guest never walks the house before booking. Every bedroom, every bathroom, the kitchen as equipped, the pool deck, the game room, the parking. The full breakdown is in What Do Vacation Rental Photos Need to Show in the Kissimmee Corridor?
Airbnb's help documentation states that every room or space must have at least one photo in order to appear in the listing's photo tour (airbnb.com, undated; accessed September 2026). A room the cleaning team didn't finish is a room missing from the tour.

FAQ
Should the cleaning team stay during the shoot?
No. The clean should be finished and the crew out of the house before the shoot, because people stay out of the picture. If no one will be at the home, the access codes go into the booking flow.
Can the photographer coordinate directly with my cleaning team?
No. Lucas talks only with the manager, and the manager passes the plan to the cleaning team. One line of contact, one version of the plan.
What if the clean runs late?
Reschedule. Cancelling and rescheduling are free at any notice. We ask for 24 hours when you can give it, as a courtesy, not a condition.
Should we add decor for the photos?
To us, no. If the next guest won't find it in the house, it doesn't go in the house for the photos.
Is virtual staging available for a vacation rental?
No. Virtual staging is not part of short-term bookings; the house is photographed with the furniture the guest will find.
